What is Pulsed Field Ablation (PFA)

As the first private hospital in the UK to offer pulsed field ablation (PFA) technology, I am proud to provide patients with a quicker, safer, and potentially more effective option for treating certain heart rhythm irregularities.

What is Pulsed Field Ablation?

Unlike traditional ablation methods that rely on heat or cold, PFA utilizes high-energy, short-duration electrical pulses to create targeted, non-thermal lesions in heart tissue. This innovative approach offers several advantages, including:

  • Reduced risk of collateral damage: PFA is highly selective, minimizing the impact on surrounding healthy tissue compared to thermal ablation techniques.

  • Faster procedure times: PFA procedures are typically shorter than traditional ablations, leading to quicker recovery times.

  • Lower risk of complications: Studies suggest PFA may have a lower incidence of post-procedural complications like pulmonary vein stenosis and phrenic nerve injury.

  • Potentially broader applicability: PFA is being explored for treating a wider range of arrhythmias compared to traditional methods.

Farapulse technology

We utilize the state-of-the-art Farapulse system, a next-generation PFA platform designed for enhanced precision and safety. Its advanced features include:

  • Real-time monitoring: Provides accurate control of energy delivery and minimized risk of unintended tissue damage.

  • Catheter flexibility: Allows for easier navigation within the heart, particularly for complex anatomies.

  • Minimized patient discomfort: Delivers energy in short bursts, potentially reducing pain and discomfort during the procedure.
