What Are Ectopic Beats?

Normally, every heartbeat begins in the heart's natural pacemaker, known as the sinus node.

The electrical signal then spreads through the heart in a coordinated way, producing a regular heartbeat.

Heart rhythm monitor

A 24- or 48-hour monitor records how frequently ectopic beats occur during everyday activities.

Echocardiogram

An ultrasound scan of the heart checks:

  • heart muscle function

  • heart valves

  • chamber size

  • overall heart structure


Are More Advanced Tests Sometimes Needed?

Yes.

If ectopic beats are particularly frequent or there is concern about underlying heart disease, additional investigations may include:


Cardiac MRI

A cardiac MRI can identify inflammation, scarring or heart muscle disease that may not be visible on an echocardiogram.


CT Coronary Angiogram
